National Electric Code
NEC, Article 680, outlines the bonding requirements for swimming pools. The Article states that a
common bonding grid shall be permitted to be any of the following:
(1) The structural reinforcing steel
of a concrete pool where the reinforcing rods are bonded together by the usual steel tie wires or the
equipment; (2) The wall of a bolted or welded metal rod; (3) A solid copper conductor, insulated,
covered or bare, not smaller than 8 AWG; or (4) Rigid metal conduit or intermediate metal conduit of
brass or other identified corrosion-resistant metal conduit. Additionally, an 8 AWG solid or larger solid
copper bonding conductor must be used to connect bonded parts to the grid.
Article 250, Grounding, states that grounding conductors and bonding jumpers shall be connected by
exothermic welding, listed pressure connectors, listed clamps or other listed means.
Additionally, Article 680 requires that bonding of all electrical conductive surfaces must be maintained
within five (5) feet horizontally of the inside walls of the pool. Bonding covers the drain, rebar, water
inlet pipe, skimmer, ladder, slides, diving structure, underwater lighting, junction boxes (if within 5 feet),
and/or water circulating/heating equipment.
